We start our tour to Ouarzazate and Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou before 8:00 am and return to Marrakech around 6:00pm or 7:00 pm. We drive through the Atlas Mountains, enjoying the beautiful landscapes with local villages and elevated scenery of the surrounding areas on our way.
Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified city along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. It lies in the centre of a desert plateau which contrasts with the rugged greenery of the surrounding High Atlas Mountains and has an exceptional setting at the crossroads of the Draa, Dades and Souss Valleys.
After few hours driving we will reach the most famous Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, the rose coloured mudbrick fortification complete with impressive crenellated watchtowers overlooking a river valley.
Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah is a UNESCO world heritage site and is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the country.
Do not be surprised if you recognise this place – you might have seen it in some movies, since it is frequently used by the nearby Ouarzazate movie studios as a romantic film backdrop (Lawrence of Arabia, Jesus of Nazareth, Jewel of the Nile and Gladiator).
Ouarzazate is well known for its pottery and carpets, as well for its immense and internationally well-known cinema studios which have been established by the great producers of the Seventh Art in order to facilitate shooting of numerous films.
You will have an opportunity to visit film studios and even enjoy a lunch or have a coffee at the studio cafe.
There is a chance to see international and even Hollywood film crews shooting a movie. Films such as Lawrence of Arabia (1962), The Living Daylights (1987), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), The Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Kundun (1997), Legionnaire (1998), Hanna (2011), and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011) were shot there.
